Was wondering what people know about times of flow. We have all taps out and we were excited about flow today. Low of 9 with a high of 49. Sure it was not 49 for long but thought maybe we would see a little flow, but nothing. Was 9 just to cold and the tree has to warm up enough or what? I wouldn't mind understanding the biology of the whole matter a little more.

Thought about putting the drill to work today, but even with the temps up and the sun warm still had a cold wind in the back forty. Looks like one to two inches or maybe four inches of more snow here tonight then change to sleet or freezing rain then a little rain and temps drop for the night. Long range looks like a mild warm up but not for long.(going to hold off) until next weekend for sure. If things change as the weather has been doing the troops will get a call for all hands on deck. Wife says I am restless!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say yes. We've had extreme cold here in Central PA this month and the wood needs a little time to warm up. We are NE of Williamsport and threw in a couple of taps today for spits and giggles. Temp went down to 0 last PM and reached upper 30's by late afternoon. I wasn't expecting much and at best we got a few drops. The next few days should improve with night temps in the mid 20's and day temps in the mid 30's - 40. Just be patient and best of luck this season.

I tapped today and about 1/2 the trees were running. After a couple hour I had about a pint in most containers. Hoping for a great week.

It take a little time for the trees to wake up. While the forecast may call for temps in the 40's that is in town. go to your woods and you will see a temp differnce.

I am just across the border in NY and I put taps in last night and it was blowing out the holes as I drilled. We will see what that amounts to after work.

cjf12, I am in Northwest Lancaster County. I read stuff about sap flow from Dr. Tim Perkins on this site. I have red maples which are very fickle. Stuff like ground thaw, sunshine, south facing vs. north facing bush, lower barametric pressure, and patience are some of the many factors that effect sap flow. I tapped two weeks ago during a warm spell, just because it was warm out, and the sap ran but froze for two weeks in the buckets. Now it is flowing again with the warm up. There are a few red maple trees near my house that the buds are popping. Last year I remember it was 55 in the shade and I was boiling. It's a hobby, so I just go with it!
