Heat flow in arch

Hi everyone,
This question may sound wierd. I now have a flat pan that replaced my drop flue pan didn't know if I could put blocks in the arch to divert heat up to the bottom of the pan. Will this work or will it kill my draft? This is my first year with a arch to this point I was using a 275 oil drum on its side. Thanks Sean

Yes you will need to put something in to deflect it up to the pan. Remember that the drop flues took up a considerable amount of area. You can probably bring the bottom of the arch up to within 1.5-2" of the bottom of the pan to have it work the best.

I'd suggest you calculate the area in the stack and design about 1.1-1.2x that for the under pan area. For example, if you have an 8" stack, the area is 4x4x3.14=50.24. If your inside measure of your arch is 24" then 50.24/24=2.09 x 1.2=2.5, x 1.1= 2.3. This is just my concept. Thus 2.3-2.5 under the pan (if the sizes are correct in my example.)
