Ideal height from grate to bottom of pan ?

Hi Everyone:

Now I,m second guessing my height of the grate to bottom of pan. Can others tell me what they have or what a good number is to have ? I should have measured, but I think I ave approx. 16"-17" from grate to pan. I do have 5" below the grate right now. I can raise or lower my grate if needed.

That is right around what our grates are set. I also laid fire bricks on the bottom of the arch without the insulation blanket, but we insulated the rest of our arch this year with insulation blanket and new bricks. For our grate we used cast iron and cut it to fit in the arch as a grate. Also installed a blower in the front this year where our ash/draft door was.

5 or 6 inches is about the same height as my rig which looks similar to yours. I would second, however, Shawn's mention of a blower in the ash door. I believe blowers make a HUGE improvement.
