Just up graded from kitched pans over firepit to a Lapieere 19x 36. I got it all bricked in with the provided 40 bricks. My question is what happens in the ash box below the grates? Should that be bricked? Joints sealed? Insulated?

Thanks,
Fletch

Hi Fletch:

I dont know your machine, but woodstoves are kinda all the same in one way. Manufactured wood stoves don't have anthing in the ash pan, no bricks no insulation. I guess it follows the theory that hot air rises. The spent ash will insulate anything below as it falls. At best,,or worst,, some small red coals may drop in there but nothing to worry about.

Hope that helps.

I'd use arch board on the sides of the ash drop. I assume it's galvanized so if you don't it will rust after the heat gets to it.
