I searched around here but didn't see anything, Can I run the hood without a stack for this year? Just picked it up and running a bit short on time. Will it help efficiency or hurt it since there is no stack for draft. It is a 2x5 raised flue pan with a 12" hole for the hood.
Thanks

i have seen many sugarhouses that had the steam stack just end up into the cupola, and i remember seeing a very large, and tall, sugarhouse in vt that had just about 4 ft of stack on the hood and just open to the air, seemed to work fine for the preheater and allowed the steam to go up better. i think if it were mine i would try and put atleast a section of steam stack on it to get the steam up a bit

I ran mine without any stack last year and didn't notice any problems. Like he said adding some would alleviate some steam in the sugar house though. My flue pan is 4x8.

I have a stud just above the hood so until I get to it next year, I'll give it a try. Worse case I just take it off and run.
Thanks

I'd run some stack, even if you need to go on a slope to miss the "stud" (ceiling joist?) just to get the steam up higher. Try getting some aluminum stack if you can. For next year you can frame around the "joist to make an opening and then go straight. Or you could do like I did. I bought 1 yr used SS hoods for my new pans. Both stacks were under joists. I moved the flue pan stack 8" to be in the right place, then I moved the syrup hood stack 5" (to one end of the hood as far as it could go) then I had a SS offset made to step over another 6". Now both of my hood stacks will terminate up in the cupola.

Try here they have just about everything, aluminum, Stainless all types of stuff. for that size hood you don't need a hole that big a 8" will be just fine. but here anyway.
