After having to walk in 1/2 mile carrying my tools and supplies when my 04 Polaris 500 HO 4x4 ATV with chains could not get in, I bought an old sled yesterday. I got a 1990 Polaris Indy Trail 488CC. Needs a seat or seat rebuild but it seems to run good. I haven't even opened it up (I may never, not my style at my age) but it is faster than my 1968 Arctic Cat Panther sled I had 35+ yrs ago. I have an ice fishing sled with tow bar to pull behind it. Now too much snow should not be as much of a problem. I need to get it registered and insured this week and then I'll be in the woods working and playing a little.

registered and insured? do they let you run them on public roads up there? around here if its not street legal you cant register it be it a quad, mule utility vehichle, golf cart etc. the only exception is a few federal lands allow dirt bikes but only off road and require there own registration.

Very cool! I have my sled at Dad's House...I'm really hoping I don't need to go get it and can bring it over once it gets warmer out! It needs to be fixed won't start and I don't really wanna mess with it in the cold!

Yes, in NY the spend and tax state they must be registered and insured unless you only ride them on your own land. In some areas we can run the roads, usually for limited distances to get from one trail to another. Even if the are not run on the road they need the registration with the exception mentioned above. A portion of the registration fee actually goes to clubs who maintain the trail systems.

Well i guess thats not a bad system realy, here they had talk of requiring registration for atvs even if used only on your own land, that kinda went away after many groups said well if you offer up some state land to ride then it would be workable, but just collecting money to register them no way. apparently the state wasnt interested in opening up places to ride as it kinda died and havent heard any more in years

Way to go Dave, I bought an 06 SkidDoo Tundra for just that reason this past November. It only has a 32" ski stance and made for working in the bush - by mostly trappers, hunters and such up north. Only weights 377 lbs so getting unstuck is not a problem. Like it so much, I'm trading up to a newer 4 stroke Tundra. It will go places the Gator just can't get into.6474
