Will the sap flow be the same in 5/16 inch tubing as it would be in 1/2 inch tubing with the same amount of taps? would the bigger tubing empty out sooner then the 5/16 inch tubing on a gravity line with 2%-6% slope?

With the 5/16 you will get some natural vacuum....yes, the 1/2 will empty faster but without creating any vacuum

1/2" laterals on vacuum is something Dr Tim was studying, if I remember correctly. It allowed better vacuum to the taphole because of the separation between liquid and gas.

Yes it did, but only if you have vacuum. If gravity the 5/16 gives some natural vacuum, especially at the 6% slope (and higher).

I cut out my 3/4 black and went to 4 5/16 runs with 20 to 30 taps each with much less y's and t's my syrup lighten up a lot I think it runs cooler. my vote is no Y's or T's on the lower part of the runs more strait runs you going to find you use less tube then a lot of y's
