Put in 30 taps 12-30-12,put in 30 more new years day and already gathered 25 gallons of sap from the first 30 jugs!It looks like ideal sap weather for the next five days.I will fire up the evaporator this Friday.Last season I lost half my sap do to insects getting into my milk jugs. This season I drilled 1/2 inch holes in the jug lids and put a piece of 1/2 inch plastic tubing though the cap and jammed the other end into the spile. It works, not one bug got in.I guess bugs are not a problem in colder climates but one we have to deal with in Tennessee. Wow, I never knew bugs could drink that much.. Pour it through some screen wire for a filter and cook it down.. They do not drink or pee much.

Nothing like straining moths out of sap.
