Wondering whats everybodys thoughts on the upcoming season. I know up here in my neck of the woods we had a LOT of rain and then the ground froze up rock solid, now we have about 2ft. plus of snow on the ground. Im saying its gonna be a good season but i guess we will see how the spring plays out as far as day time temps go. Two years ago started just like this and we ended up having a epic season. whats everybodys thoughts?

No rain hardley any snow ground still unthawed. Still in the drought.

I feel we might have a good season this year. We had a warmish and dry period after the season so the sugar in the ground will go right to the trees, and not get diluted with to mch rain, and we've had a good amount of rain this fall, plue the snow that we just got will be here with us a while I hope.---Thats my theory anyway, but I dont have a crystal ball, and I will look back at this thread in may and wonder what I was thinking...

It will be a great season until it warms up too much

Here in NNY it"s looking good with nearly two feet of snow over unfrozen ground and a very rainy fall, if the temps come thru for us. Happy New Years everyone.

Lots of sunshine this past summer with alot of rain in the fall should help. Its actually winter in NE Ohio right now, which we really didnt have last year. So my prediction is "better than last season."

I predict that spring will come, and the sap will flow.

Actually, we are in the process of putting together a very interesting and very large multivariable data set to look at how previous temperature (summer, fall, winter, spring), precip (summer, fall, winter, spring), insects and disease prevalence, seed production, etc. are associated with sap yield and sap sugar content. We have most of the data collated now, but am waiting for just a few more variables from some cooperators.

I'm up near Port Huron and my little creek was actually flowing before things froze and it's been below freezing for 2 weeks and we have a foot of snow on the ground. I'm thinking it's gonna be a great year here just worried about this past Summers lack of rain...

Is going from the worst sugaring season in 40 years (2012) to the best sugaring season in 40 years (2013) possible ?? I certainly know its possible and looking at the long range forecasts, the season will be late and extended in all parts of the country. Making for one of the best in years.

hoping for a higher sugar content this year cant complian about last year though. thinking with the drought the stress on the trees will bear a higher sugar content? i noticed when planting winter wheat that the leaves were all read and no yellow this year

I tested a few woods trees a couple weeks ago and they ran hard and tested 3-3.5

Someone from here I think has already Tapped in Southern PA... It's on my FB and until the 20th he was getting alot of sap...

It's been bitter cold here and we just got another 6 inches of Lake Effect snow. Warm up Monday and Tuesday then back to cold.

I'm gonna plan to tap around February 20th again and hope for a strong flow!

Good luck everyone!

got 100 of the new clear check valves from Leader and ran a new line into a seperate tank. Will make it easy to check their performance per tap. Probably put the new drop lines in and tap them this wednesday. The rest of our taps I like to be tapped in by march 1st but about Feb 10th I may start checking long range forecasts and hang a few buckets to get a better feel when to go.
We have added a lot of frost since 1st of yr but lost most of snow pack we had through December. I am more hopefull for 13 vs 12 but wish we had another 2ft of snow in the woods
