I have 2 1/2 x 8 the back is a V pan set up like raised flue. The square inches in the under side of the pan is slightly more then that of the stack thinking my brick should be right about a 1/2 inch under the bottom of the Vs send the fire right up in the pan what do you think would It be to close ?

Mine is a regular raised flue pan, I have about 1/4" under the bottom of the flues. You might need slightly more under V flues since you will have less flue channel for the heat to pass thru. !/2" might be good.
