looking for ideas on sump pump set ups, planning on having a small open top tank mounted on a trailer in front of the 1000 gal nurse tank, to dump buckets into and have it pumped into the large tank so nobody has to dump buckets in the small opening of the large tank. could I have a simple 12 volt sump with an on/off switch and turn it on when small dump tank gets enough in it,or should it be a float sump, any ideas or what would work best?

Thats what I would do in your case. There is no need for a float pump if you are pumping and dumping buckets you will be right there run the pump.
I use a float pump to pump my sap from my collecting tank in my sap shed into the larger storage tank outside the shed, but I am not there to turn the pump on and off.
Although a sump pump will work just fine the problem you might have is ( food grade issue ).

Rule brand bilge pump with a float switch. I would reccomend at least a 2000gph pump.

Most pumps are 1500gph which is plenty considering you are dumping buckets.
