I have worked on this since fall of 2010. I need to finish the wall framing, then the siding is next. I have our 250 gallon barrel evaporator setting in there. This Spring I will "Rig" it up to work. The days of boiling in the open air are soon behind me!

I have the raceway plowed in and after the siding the wires will be pulled and we'll have 60 amperes at the ready.

Hope everyone here is healthy and happy.

Merry Christmas!
Pete

I thought I'd toss a few photos up. I've taken quite a few but these should give you the idea of what was going on.

The main frame is all mortise and tenon. The only new material here is the concrete, and the metal on the roof. Everything else is reclaimed.

That looks awesome... how did you do the stone work?

Yes I did. It was my first attempt, and I just learned as I went. My favorite tool was an antique butter knife that was bent just so, to tool the joints.

As a mason, very nice job on the stone work. Looks good and should last forever as long as water doesn't get in there.

Did you set up forms and then pour concrete? What is the foundation for that structure?

Pete S

The slab is monolitic with a grade beam.

The grade beam is 12" deep and 16" wide w/ 2-#4 rods.

#10 wwm reinforcement finished out the top.

The slab is control joint cut into 4 sections.

This will be it's 3rd winter, 2nd being loaded without a snow cover.

Sorry to keep asking questions, but I'm impressed... one more question... for the walls did you use slip forms? I think that's what the process is called... If so how did you estimate the amount of concrete for the walls... also if you did use slip forms did you build the wall in section 1-2' high at a time?
I see you are in WI so I imagine your seeing the same temps as in Maine...

I tried to attach more photos to kind'a show how I did it. The boards I used were 2 x 14 barn joists, then when I was up 2 feet, I slid them up!

I slip formed the back only, and tooled the front as it cured.

Estimating? Well I bought 6 bags of "pre-mix" and saw how far that went.

I think we went through 35 bags of mortar and 3.75 tons of sand. (?)

Yes it is COLD here. Going to get a warm up next week but then back cold.

I'll gladly answer any question you have. I really need to find a way to post more photos on a hosting site, as I've taken quite a few.644164426443

Great job Pete! If there was a calender made with sugar shack pictures, yours would be the cover model! 3 weeks ago i made a run down to your neck of the woods to buy a Ford truck from Burkart Ford. Beautiful country down there. Are you close to the dealership?

I'm about 7 miles from Burkhart Ford in Plymouth. PM me if you'd like to stop by.

Looks very nice. I would like to stop in some time and check out your operation as I am new to this and do not live far from you. I am located about 6 miles east of Fond du Lac.

We are just south of 23, 5 miles west of Plymouth.

This year the evaporator and the siding will be a major "RIG" as there's lots to do and can't seem to find materials for siding.

But you are welcome to stop!

Very nice!

How does the stonework receive your posts? Is there some kind of a mortise through that cap stone and into the wall?

Pete S

I have large 2.5" x 14" sill planks that have nortises that the post drop into.

The planks are bolted to the top of the stone wall.

Thanks!

Thanks. I built a timber frame shack last year, and I am thinking about building a timber frame greenhouse this summer using some kind of a stone knee-wall like you did. Just wasn't sure how to set the posts onto the stonework.

Enjoy that shack!
