How about a Gast 1023 or even 1550 rotary vane

I would get a regular vac pump from ebay for refirgeration type things... They are cheap and "disposible" if something happens. $90 is not much to risk on only 40 taps so I would not want to run a few hundred dollar pump.

Any old dairy vac pump would work on 50 taps and if you were closer I'd give you one!

I second this. I have a 1/6 HP, 3cfm vacuum pump that is used to evacuate the cooling loops for air conditioners in cars. I've used it for 3 years on over 100 taps with no problems at all. I just add about a 1/4 cup of oil every few days. Here is one example:

so how do these work exactly? Is this basically just a sap pump? Which means you need to run it only when the sap is running right..There is no releaser or anything else needed?

No it's still a vacuum pump, you'd need a releaser or vacuum tank.
