Probably not enough to notice. Yes, the more heat you can keep in the arch the better, but a 2x6 will only do so much. I put 1" blanket in mine and am very happy with its performance.

I have the 2" in mine. Figured I would only do it once. I can hold my hand on the outside of the arch without getting burned. So you know where the heat is going then!

Did you brick and blanket, or just blanket? I'm getting ready to do my 2x6 as this will be my first year with my WF Mason Drop Tube pans - no more old english tin- all welded Stainless now. Where do you get the blanket?

I blanketed the entire inside of the arch. I only bricked the firebox and up the ramp. the brick just protects the blanket from damage where you throw the wood in etc. You do not need to brick the rest of it. I bought my blanket online. I do not remember where actually.

I agree. Bricks over blanket or board in the firebox. Board is easier behind the bricks. Blanket tucked around edges and screwed to door. Blanket only elsewhere.

It actually works out fine. I had a cast iron door and drilled and tapped #10-24. It cuts easily. Then used stainless screws and fender washers and screwed on the blanket. Cut off an grind the screw threads sticking out flush and then stake the perimeter with a punch to prevent them from backing out. A coat of black stove paint and it looks good.

I made an airtight steel door and did the same thing.
