I have a 2x6 block evaporator. It ran great last year, but this year I want to add some air to the fire. To keep it simple I want to close off the ash opening below the door and mount a wood stove blower/fan below the door. My question is has anyone done this, where to find a good/cheap blower and how many CFM's should it have? I think I have seen this done on halfpints before?

Not sure how many CFM you would need? I installed one on a half pint I had. I made a new draft door and installed it with the same pin that the old one used. The blower was out of a gas furnace. (It wasent for the heat exchanger). It was for the draft. I made a plate that I could adjust the air going into the blower to regulate. I now have a 2x6 and obtained another blower like the one I used on the half pint. This one I am going to install in the back of the fire box. The output end of the blower is only about 3 1/2 inches in diameter but gives more than enough. Not sure if this helps.

I am using this blower from Grainger http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/DAYTON-Shaded-Pole-Blower-6FHY0 and this rheostat http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/FANTECH-Speed-Control-15W819.

Here is information on combustion improvement and specifics on blowers http://www.uvm.edu/~pmrc/Combustion.pdf

I have a blower from a Miller mobile home furnace under my 2x6. I run it full rpm with one side closed off.

I think you would be ok with 273-450ish cfms with a way to control motor speed or intake air.
