I am in the process of turning a manufactured shed with vinyl siding into a sugar shack. I have a homemade 2X3 evaporator with a blower system and it gets very hot. My concern is that I want to put a peak style roof jack for the 6" stove pipe to exit the roof but should I use double wall insulated pipe for the section that goes thru the roof and into the roof jack or am I ok with just single wall the whole way up as long as there is a few inch gap between the wood and the stove pipe. I just dont want the pipe and or jack to get to hot that is catches my shack on fire. Any suggestions and or pics of your setup would be very helpful. I am also having a hard time finding a peak roof jack, this is a hobby and not really wanting to spend $200 on a custom made jack from leader nor do i think it would get here in time. Thanks!!

I think code is that a single wall stack can’t be closer than 36” to combustible material.

I have a 10” stack going through a 12” roof jack. Below the roof jack (through the rafters) I have ceramic blanket wrapped around the 10” stack and a sheet of galvanized over the blanket, but I’m within 12” of the wood rafters and cupola framing.

No one has ever said that hobbies are cheap. Best bet is to go with a proper setup, and use double wall, class Flue pipe. It is stainless and will far outlast regular black pipe anyhow.

I would DEFINITLY go with double, even triple wall, just for peace of mind. I found a sheet metal worker in my area who made a roof jack to my specs for half the price of Leader.

Yes, all of the above! Thats the safest way to do it. Yeah, a little pricey, but you'll sleep better at night. And you won't be nervous while boiling!

And anyone can find a lot of folks locally and get things half price compared to Leader. I don't know how they come up with some of those retail prices.

Ok thanks guys that's what I figured but a lot of the pics of sugar shacks I see it almost looks like its being run single wall. Another questions does anyone know if any mainstream manufacturers make a peak roof jack or if they are only custom made and if so anywhere other than leader I can get one?

The last two years I had a D@G 18X48 with a double wall pipe and after one hour of running it you would not want to put your hand on it. Make sure you have good clearance around your pipe.

Go to your local woodstove and/or fireplace dealer. They will either have one or can order one. Or go to a local sheet metal fabricator. They'll make anything, to whatever your needs are and may come in at a better price than the woodstove place. Have them all price a galvanized one and a stainless one. You may also find the stainless one from the fabricator will be cheaper than the store bought unit- so maybe you could swing the better of the two?

We are about to put on our roof jack, and run out a 10" stack out the top. I am going to use the fiber blanket aginst the joists. Then flash over this blanket, with an additional flashing around my stack with air space between. I have read of many sapshacks burnt to the ground, built with good intentions of saving a little cash. I would not tell anyone how to do there own work, just my opinion. My good friend says "you do yours and I'll do mine and we'll see what works best, it's an experement!".
