I'm looking for a propane burner that will sit under a +/-20 gallon flat pan for pre-heating syrup to filter and can in the off-season. Something with a couple of long tubes that will heat quick. I can't seem to find a good place to buy one.... Any ideas? Thanks!

I just ordered a 2 x 3 flat pan from Smoky Lake Maple Products to do just what you want to do.

I use these from Agri Supply Co.. At first I ordered one but as soon as I saw that one I ordered another. I ended up with 3 that I use. They are heavy duty and heat fast when needed. The company is great to deal with too. On one I had a regulator that failed fairly soon. I contacted ASC and they sent a replacement out free, no questions, free shipping and it was sent out the same day, they didn't even need me to ship the bad one out. Here is a link: http://www.agrisupply.com/carolina-cooker-22-in-cooker-stand-and-burner/p/40322/
They're a southern company but that didn't seem to slow things down.

Beware the home depot one. Read the review!
On the ASC one, the burner is 175,000 BTU and the unit was very well made. You can use 2 if your pan is big enough. The top ring diameter is 14" and when operating the flame is outside that. I use 14" OD SS pots on mine and I need to turn the burner down to just have it barely go around the outer edjes of the bottom. If you had a 2x3 pan with 2 burners you will have a good rig. Beware however, you will not run these on one 20# tank. I have a bulk tank outside my sugarhouse and ran a gas line with several take offs for running these. I no longer use these burners (since I bought a finisher) but I'm not ready to sell them.

This company also makes some well made sturdy units http://www.bayouclassiccooking.com/

I did read the reviews, some people said they boiled great and some people described regulator issues. I have a single burner bayou that I use to fry at cookouts, if you turn on the tank to fast the regulator can stick. Shut off the gas, smack the regulator, turn back on slow and you have a great burner. I also have a double martin brand burner under my finisher and really like them but they are twice the price of the bayou.

Why not make your own? I did this: http://mapletrader.com/community/showthread.php?13413-BBQ-grill-turned-canner which is just a single burner. But there are always grills at the dump and it would be fairly easy to make a two burner unit.

Keep the ideas coming, I appreciate the info. I have a 23 gallon vertical canner from leader and that sits on an old kitchen stove. I want to set up a large (or 2 of the round) propane burner and rectangular pan to quickly heat up a batch that needs to go through the filter press and pump into canner. I've seen a few of thes large burners around but can't seem to find a place to buy. They have long tubes with holes and a manifold with knops....

Here's a couple pics of the burner stand that I made for my warming pan. The burners are stainless steel and came out of a forced-air furnace. I made the gas manifold out of a piece of 1/2" pipe, drilled and tapped for the propane orifices. I got the orifices out of the furnace also. This unit is approximately 24x26, and my pan holds +/- 18 gallons of syrup.

That is sweet inthewoods! If only I lived in WI and could hire you! Those long tubes are exactly what I was looking for but will probably have to go with a camping type with 2 round burners.... Thanks for sharing!

How far apart do you have these pipe burners spaced? Do you have a rough idea on how many BTU's this setup is?
Thanks for the pics!

The burners are about 6 1/2 inches apart. The BTU's I don't know about. The burners came out of a 75,000 BTU furnace. I have a high pressure regulator with my propane tank, and can get a LOT of BTU's if needed, but I don't find it to be necessary. I can heat 10 gallons of syrup, to 190 degrees, in about 20-25 minutes.

You might find what you want out of an old gas clothes dryer. I have one I use on my forge that came out a commercial dryer that was in a carwash.

Also check out the replacement grill parts at lowes or home dopot this time of the year many times there on clearance.

Hey all, I really wish I caught this discussion sooner, hope you can help me out here. I bought the 2 burner gas finisher from Leader made by bayou classics and it looks great. However, it has a high pressure regulator (10#) on it to allow for the super flame (rated around 120,000 BTU). THe problem is I have NO propane service company who will hook this up claiming they will not allow for high pressure to run into a building??? The regulator can be switched out to a 5 # reg. but I believe this will defeat the purpose of the stove. I was told the pressure coming off the tank outside is always set for the lower pressure (5#) units. Has anyone run into this problem and if so what is the fix, OR is the low pressure regulator on this stove turn out to put enough flame??? thanks for any advice.....ryan

I wonder if no high pressure running into a building is a state regulation. I have a bulk tank outside and a main gas line runs into the sugarhouse. Then I ran several tees, spaced along that main, with a valve for each and then a regulator for the appliance being used. Initially the tank regulator was low pressure, but 3 of my items on the line had high pressure and would not burn properly. I called the propane company and they changed their regulator to high pressure, now everything works right, at times I have had a canner (16x24), low pressure, 3 high output burners (175,000 BTU each) high pressure and a tankless hot water heater, low pressure on at the same time and all work right. I currently don't use the 3 burners routinely, but I use a finisher (Leader's little one (16-18 x 34", BTU's unknown) the canner and hot water and one time I also used one of the 175,000 BTU burners at the same time. This would only be possible with a high pressure regulator.

THank you for the reply. I live in VT and I doubt the state is restricting the high pressure in a building, they do not restrict anything else for building codes!! So I will have to run this by them again. I am glad to know you are doing this without problem. They are coming this week to place the new tank etc and hook up the conventional low pressure cook stove, so perhaps I can get him to T off to the high pressure and just leave the high pressure reg. on the bayou classice stove! Thanks again for the reply this helps me quite a bit!!! I may be back to fill you in or ask more questions if I end up have to do the hook up myself! Have a great season!!!!!

In case anyone is still looking for a cheaper setup.

Costco Has this: http://www.campchef.com/expedition-3x-triple-burner-stove.html

for $160.00

I just starting boiling two days ago with this all new to me setup. Its a HUGE improvement over the one burner turkey cooker method I used the last two years.

It takes 20 minutes to bring it to a full boil from cold with 20 gallons of sap in the tank. The tank was custom made for this burner setup by a local metal shop.

I did have to upgrade to a 100lb tank yesterday because it uses a little more gas than my old one burner. :)
