This year my man Joe Bastardi said colder than normal. Then Im talking to my buddy Doug and hes saying jetstream is similar to last year giving us another warm one. Any of you weather gurus have a general feel from studying the weather sights what were in for generally? Theron
I've seen on several of the long range climatological forecasts its going to be alittle of both. Until the middle to the end of January its supposed to stay like it has for the last sevevral weeks (spaced fronts forming in the pacific with the pattern flowing west to east with very little dip in the jet stream). At the end of January a blocking Greenland High is supposed to form which will squeeze this west to east pattern and force cold canadian air into the midwest through New england. This pattern is supposed to stay in place through the end of March with colder than normal temps. I for one would welcome a colder than normal spring. Last years warm up really screwed things up.

If we're voting I'll take Ed R's forecast.

If history repeats itself like does quite often, it will be a year of little snowfall and a little cooler spring then last year, but still not great production, 1987 was just like last year and 1988 was as I just predicted. This happened one other time in history since they have been keeping records and that was in 1946 and 47, or 47 and 48, I would have to look it up to be sure, lets wait and see.

....lets wait and see.
That's probably about as good a prediction as you can get.

It certainly is warm here. No snow in fact I was thinking of plowing a couple of food plots bigger this weekend. In dec!! No frost.

I would listen to Joe B. He was bang on with Hurricane Sandy. Remember winter doesn't "officially" start until Dec. 21. Unlike last year there is a lot of cold air bottled up in north-western Canada and Alaska. Parts of Alaska have had temperatures that averaged 20 degrees below normal for the past two weeks. This air will eventually work it's way south and east over the next few weeks. By the end of next week the plains will be much colder than normal, and by the 20th I think the cold air will finally work it's way over to the east coast. That area will see cold and snowy conditions through and end of Christmas and into the first two weeks of January. After that it's hard to know, but there is normally a 3-7 day January thaw sometime in January most years and the long range climate variables (PDO and NAO) may be signalling a pattern similar to what Ed R indicated. I highly recommend subscribing to weather bell premium ( at least for the months of Feb-April) as this is the site where Joe Bastardi issues his forecasts from, they have great analysis of long tern weather patterns and a plethora of computer models to analyse. I doubt this spring will be anything close to last year. Here is eastern Ontario last March we only had 6 nights below freezing after the 12th, 13 days over 50, 6 consecutive days above 60, and 1 day above 80.
IF us producers had any influence on the weather, I dont think that we would be very popular folks! haha

I hope Ed R. is right! It has been cold cold cold here for the past few weeks. Everything was frozen solid. Moosehead lake was near froze over wich doesent usally happen untill later in the year. But on monday it made a 180 turn and it was 52 yesterday. It turned colder last night and today had a little bite to it but i am a little nervous..... i spent way to much money this summer to have another off season!

I listen to whatever forecast the weather women are talking about on The Weather Channel. Steph Abrahams keeps me paying attention in the mornings.

Took these pictures yesterday on the way to town. It has been fairly warm here, but just now has turned and the ground is finally freezing up. We took some home and boiled it down just to see what would happen, and it smelled terrible! Any thoughts?

Around here it looks like the weather is supposed to take a colder, more seasonable turn right before Christmas, although sadly too late for a white Christmas.

The forcast for Northern Ontario for Thursday is 12 inches of wet snow with 51 mph wind gusts.Shaping up to be a great day HaHa.So far this winter wet, windy , snowy ,rainy and mostly mild.Only one night on 12/11/12 it went to -6 F.But it looks for the weather to turn colder around Christmas.Very little frost in the ground as the electricians just now trenched power in to my new sugar house. To all have a very merry Christmas with friends and family.Lets hope for good weather for a successfull season!!!!

Raining Cats and Dogs here in NH. We had two maybe three inches of snow on ground, but just about gone. Good weather to burn brush in sugar orchard. Up in Northern NH a foot or more of snow. Looks like cold weather coming back by weekend.

Long term forecasts are certainly looking in my favor. While they aren't the most accurate Accuweather is forecast subfreezing high temps from after Christmas till mid January, below average for us.
Personally I can't wait to rub it in the faces of everyone I know who was so happy last winter and was wishing for more of the same.

The forecast for this morning was up to 2" of snow. We got 12" which leaves us with about 16" on the level --- it's beginning to look alot like Christmas......

In Central NY we got plenty of snow. I'm not sure what the official total was but in many places I encountered depths of 18-24" as I plowed and snow blowed. (I use a blower at the house, but plow my mother's and the sugarhouse). Plowing deep snow with thawed ground is never easy. The truck handled it fine but several passes were needed, and I lifted the blade a couple inches to do less digging dirt and crushed stone.
After plowing I drove past a medium size parking lot where my good friend and machinist buddy was plowing. I stopped to ask if he was having fun yet? He said he had been plowing for 4 hrs but was having a problem with the plow. It seems the blade power angle valve needs some work, He could only angle it by hand and when he hit any imbalance in the snow load the blade did whatever it wanted. I said "Are you pd by the hour?" No, he is sallaried. Well, he has bailed me out many times, in fact he gave me my high pressure blower, converted it from 3 phase to 120V, welded my AOF manifold, made repair bushings for my excavator etc, etc. etc. I then plowed the lot for him (likely over an acre). My plow on the F 250 7.3L diesel works very well. It took about 30 minutes. He was delighted. I told him to convince his boss to get the plow repaired. While he is an excellent machinist, he prefers not to get into hydraulics if avoidable. The plow was on a 1 ton 4x4 stake rack, just needs the plow to work right.

An additional 12" today, a week ago we had bare ground. I think we've had about 30" since then but have about 20" now on the ground after settling. May need the snowshoes this year....

You have to understand that the newsmen and weathermen's job isn't to report the news but to sell advertising for the network. So, the bigger the story...the more listeners...the more advertising. Typically if you divide the forcast by 2, it will be about spot on!

Finished cleaning out today after yesterday's dump, probably about 20" on the ground,I figured we would get dumped on this winter-Environment Canada's earlier prediction in the fall was for a mild open winter like last year,I always go complete opposite of their long range prediction, guess who is always right?
We got a foot here in Deerfield, the problem I see is that the woods are still completely thawed, add a thick blanket of snow that means the ground probably won't freeze solid. Now when that happens we usually get a quick season right?
Oh and more snow coming tomorrow, good thing I was planning on spending my first day working the sugar bush in Northwood on sunday.
