looking for suggestions for a sap hauling tank. Stainless, and needs to drain completely. Between 450-600 gal capacity. One option is to use an oval milk tank and weld up some sort of cradle for it to make it more stable. Has anyone re-configured the lids on a flat top milk tank to be able to haul sap in a truck or trailer? Or fabricated some sort of top to go on an open top sap tank to keep the sap in during transport.

If converting the oval milk tank is best, does anyone know of a 500-600 gal oval tank for sale? Needs to be short- like 72-74" long.

thanks-

Eric

I would think the sloshing back and forth would lose a lot if a regular milk tank was used. I think a fully enclosed vac type tank should be OK. I think larger haul tankers have baffles. A 600 gal tank 80-90% full would throw most trucks around a lot, at a time of year when roads are often slushy or icy.

Looks like a fellow trader has a 600 or 650 oval milk tank that will fit.

I have considered the baffling component- does anyone out there that has a old milk tanker have baffles? what kind of design is it?

They make small food grade plastic baffle structures

not sure if these might be more of a pain in the A$$ than they are worth. And not cheap.

So might consider welding some stainless ears on inside of tank and making some sort of bolt in to place stainless baffle design that is made of pieces that can be passed through the manway (might need to find a skinny welder!)

haven't thought it all through yet...

People are hauling the 1000 gal horizontal poly tanks without a problem. I think you'll be fine. I haul a 500 gal poly truck tank, and I think it sloshes less than the 210 gal tank I started with.

As far as I know, milk tankers don't have baffles.

Eric, I have a 1,000 gal. oval shaped s/s tank that I have mounted on a dual axle trailer and haul behind a 3/4 ton pickup. This tank doesn't have any baffles and there isn't any real noticeable sloshing. I haul sap about 12 miles from the woods to the sugar house. I have a 750 gal. aluminum tank that I used for awhile until I found this larger tank.

milk tanks do not have baffles..... they may have two compartments but no baffles.

Well, the semi tanks I pulled (years ago) had baffles. They were open across the bottom (maybe 6-8 inch gap) and had large holes thru the divider part. Seems there might have been 2 or 3 baffles in a one-compartment tanker. Even then, at a stoplight, you could get sea-sick from the rocking.

I haul 2 1100 gal. vertical poly tanks (wider than they are tall). The sloshing isn't too bad, especially the fuller they are.
