As you can see the concrete is now poured. The big decision now is 8ft wall for a dedicated sugarhouse or 12ft wall for multiple use possibly garage or workshop? Please give your input.

I have never heard anyone say they built their storage/garage/workshop etc. too large...always seem that you will be able to fill the space. I would go 12ft wall....

Go up a couple feet (3 rows) with block fill them and then make a ten foot wall. my 2 cents. it will never be to big

If you go that high, you will want a hood. My cielings are 10' and I was told the steam would rise better and escape better thru the cupola with less condensing with a lower ceiling. A hood fixes the issue.

Make the wall as high fits your taste but in the long run you'll want the shanty to be dedicated.

Arch, plus max pan plus steam away plus hood is just over 8' tall. I don't know what your plans are but i would not go less than 10' just cus you never know what you may want to do evaporator wise in the future. Also as it may be used for other stuff you will want a 9' door! You will never say "i wish i had less head room"! very exciting!

I vote for 12 feet tall.

Thanks for all of the advice. It is great to get the thoughts and experience of so many other maplers. The only 1 other factor no one has mentioned is the houshold "MRS" she has pulled her trump card and will not allow anything that looks closer to a garage than a sugar shack in her sight. Turns out if I want to stay mapling an 8ft wall it will be. Good news is my evaporator is more than sufficient for my bush so I don't forsee any major upgrades to the evaporator. I will keep posting progress pictures for your comments.

6045Well after un seasonal cold weather and early snow we have managed to get a little more done to the new sugar house. Last night the salvaged roof trusses were hoisted on to the walls. Hopefully this weekend the siding will be sawed and next week the roof will be sheeted.

I can relate to your "MRS" comment as I'm the Mrs. here. I'm very glad the eyesore corncrib leftovers are now the sides of our still being built sugar shack, even if the sugar shack is more in my view than where the crib used to be.

Finally!!! A small break in the extreme winter conditions. Now I have been able to make some small progress on the new shack. Time is ticking and progress has been small. Siding and windows have been installed electrical is roughed in. Good lord willing and the creek don't rise, we will be substantially complete for a March 1st beginning to the 13 sugaring season.
