My neighbor called me about 3:30 this morning. "Hey Phil, did you know your woods is on fire". He and I worked to get alot of the leaves out. Then 4 fire departments showed up to help. Then at 5:30 am it started raining (thank God, no, I mean it I thanked God). In the dark it appears that no live trees have been damaged, will look closer in the light. Has anyone else had this happen, and can I know what to expect come sugar time.

I have seen fires in a maple stand and it did not hurt the maples. I always wonder what would happen to all the tubing if there had been some.

Though I suppose you could have a fire at any time of year, it seems far less likely in the spring after a winter of rains and snow. How did your fire start?

On 11/3/12 my neighbor had a large fire near my woods, then on 11/11/12 they put a large pile of cardboard on the "cold" fire spot. Winds the night of the fire were up to 35 mph. I guess hot coals lasted in the "cold fire spot" for 8 days! My neighbor hopefully learned something. He has about 10 other acres to set up a burn pile, maybe he won't burn right next my woods next time.

Sure he will. My experience, anyways, is that's just the way some folks are. "Change" is only what jingles in their pocket, so don't put much hope in them changing their ways. Just tell the authorities what they're up to, early enough to not cause you any more losses.

Thank you for that, I went to school with him, he is a great guy. Has nice dairy cows also. Hope to stay in good relations, I am sure I can. But as you know things would be great if it weren't for the people.

Sorry, Phil, and pardon me while I take my foot out of my mouth. I wasn't thinking beyond the 90% of my own neighbors. No excuse for my remarks.
