depends on ph, you add until you get to the proper ph, I believe it is 11.

Yes xle's need ph of 11. It will vary just because of your water. Not everybodies water starts at the same ph.

Yeah I think if you just go by what manufacturers say, you may waste a lot of soap. I found I could get by on a 1/4 of the recommendation on the container.
You will need pH test strips or a meter. I have a meter that I like, but the day I dropped it in the wash tank I wished I had strips for backup.

My meter only worked half the season. I tried calibrating it, but wouldn't take. Now I just use the strips.

one thing not explained very well is that when you start your wash and measure the pH, it will change.
As the temperature goes up, the chemicals react while they do what they are supposed to do. The reaction will
cause the pH to lower when you are using the basic soap, and it will rise ( from 1 or so ) when you are using the acid.
To get the best results, check the pH after you've been running the cycle a while and add a bit more to keep it in the
target range. The biggest changes come as the temperature reaches the maximum, generally about 115 degrees

I did make that mistake early on, of checking before it heated up. But the strips still told me to use way less than prescribed when hot.
