View Full Version : How close should the moisture trap be to the pump?

Just finished the platform for where the vacuum pump will be sitting(which will be fairly close to the generator) to save on cost of wire etc.The vacuum line will be running about 150 feet or more until it hits the first receiver at the tanks.Should I place the moisture trap close to the pump in the pump building,or should I have it down closer to the receiver?
Thanks in advance,Bruce

I would say close to the pump. You want to catch any potential moisture produced in the 150' as well.

Thanks Tim,that's what I was kind of thinking.

Bruce,
I would say if the vacuum pump is right next to your releaser, then one moisture trap is fine. I have a releaser right next to my vacuum pump with a moisture trap, behind my sugar house and a releaser 1.100 away.
The first year that I had vacuum (6 years ago), the releaser 1,100 away from the vacuum pump malfunctioned and the vacuum pump pulled the sap 1,100 to the vacuum pump moisture trap (up 45'
in elevation) and shut down the moisture trap. I now have a moisture trap at the releaser 1,100 from the vacuum. It is cheap insurance. Over the past 5 years, I have had that same releaser 1,100 away
malfunction 3 or 4 times and the remote moisture trap shut the problem down.
From my experience, if the releaser is even only 150' away, I would put a trap there also.

I have one at the releaser for the same reason as Bruce. I used to have one at the pump before I put in a water cooled pump. Now I don't bother with that one.

I'd put it at the releaser. When the releaser fails (it will), it'll keep your vacuum line from getting sap in it and freezing in the future. They're not perfect though and I do find that moisture traps do fail sometimes and still get sap in the vac. line. I also have a LR pump, so don't bother with one there.
