I was gonna do something like that myself except for the mettal plate I have 1 piece of 2x3 right in the middle of the opening so I was just gonna counter sink a hole with spring and run a bolt through it I am gonna do it soon. SO then I don't have to worry about having that long piece of wood to open it up!!!

It works pretty well, i have the setup on all 4 of my doors going to a central double pulley setup!

Similar to mine, but I made a rope operated kicker to open the doors, all on 2 ropes and pulleys.
