I know this sounds like a sugaring 101 question but how deep should you drill when tapping? I have read several different things.

2 is about max...Roadside monster you need to peel to orange bark either with claw on a hammer or judicious use of a hatchet...don't go beyond the orange bark before drilling!

I drill 2 inches for large trees and I have a lot that are around 30 to 36" inches in diameter with extremely thick bark that I drill 2.5".

Glen Goodrich only drills in an inch into the good wood. Meaning after you get through the bark, drill another inch or so and that is plenty. The trees heal well and the sap runs good so I am going to try it this year . Last year i drilled 1 1/2 . this is for 5/16s tree saver spouts.
