two options- put a layer of ceramic blanket on top of vermiculite or spread a thin layer of dry refractory cement on top of the vermiculite than use a spray bottle to spray a misting of water on to the cement.

Mix it 6 to 1 with portland cement to a oatmeal consistency

Yea thats the best way, I put about 2 shovels of portland cement per bag of vermiculite. Then mix it with water, it takes alot of water to get it to the oatmeal consistency.

no its not the same, you can get portland cement almost anywhere for about 10 dollars. You can try refractory but I wont guarantee it.

You could also just lay brick dry right on top of the vermiculite if you have them around. The advantage for me is I was able to tweak the slope a few times and I can easily pull it all out when I get one of those neet-o flue pans one day.
