well I started my new arch this weekend. Its 2-1/2 angle 3/16. It's 27-3/8" wide 96-1/2" long and plan on about 3' tall for easier operation. I'm still running my 2x6 pans but going to make a hot air chamber in the back to capture the heat leaving the stack and use it to pre heat AOF.
give me some input if you like looking for other ideas.

thanks Al, I'll keep the pics coming you know me. Hey I saw a prebuilt coupalo today out in front of this sugar maker up in hubbardton just sitting there on saw horses, I don't think he'll miss it he has steam stacks through the roof ;) lol. Post some pics yourself. Once i feel good about my arch I'll be putting my old one up for sale so if some one is asking about a arch only send them my way.

If you can, figure out a way to do your air preheating in a boiler tube style to get as much heat as possible. For max efficiency forced draft air needs to be 800 deg or hotter. Primary combustion takes place at about 1600 +, and wood gasses won't ignite under 1,100. So if you put in 800 deg AOF, added to 1,600, you get 1,200 degrees average and achieve secondary combustion.

Hey Flat looks like your doing a good job there, I built my first arch the same way. all heavy gauge angle and went with 11ga sheet metal on the sides. The guy that owns the carrage shed in white river is now the proud owner. I think hes still running it. \

Nice work

Lovin the frame build so far. I am in the middle of revamping mine as well and was thinking how to preheat the AOF too. Would love to duplicate the big boys and their gasification builds. Do you have any sketches of how you plan to do this? Of course I could wait until you finished, but then I might have to wait for your Patent to come out..... :o

Excellent... Will be very interested how the heated AOF works out..... :)
We just set ours back in the shack on Sat and did a test boil. Looks like an inferno through the peep glass with just a small fire in there and started boiling in 15 mins. Can't wait till season starts.

what did you use for glass, kind/type. Did you make a round tube and set the glass in it?

Naw, I found this on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Borosilicate-glass-plate-100-mm-x-100-mm-x-5-mm-/110999929555?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d81c82d3
I just cut a smaller hole in the metal front, then through the insulation. I gently used some clips to hold it in place. I hope it holds up, but I bought another one just in case.... ;)

its a piece of 3x6 like 5" long tubing with a flange welded to it. I welded a ring round the glass with 1" flat stock. Made a second flange that matches the first. used like 1/2 or 3/4 rope for a wood stove front as a gasket, both sides of glass.

Ahhh, genius. I cracked my first piece and had to get another one. I might have time to try something like that yet before we tap.... You better get a patent going on your evaporator man.... Nice job...
