Syrup that will not go thru the filter press

[FLB maple syrup]

Our group group made some dark syrup during the Maple Weekend, that has refused to go thru the hand press to be filtered. We did add plenty of the filtering agent, but the agent is not being picked up by the the paper filters
when we disassemble the press.

Anyone got any ideas or have this problem. Thanks.

Are you keeping the syrup hot before filtering? It sounds like you have broken a paper. I had this problem my first year with a press. Now I reheat the syrup to 200 deg. before filtering it. Now I have no problem getting it through. Late season syrup is ussually harder to filter since there is so much sand in it.

You may have a frame or filter plate reversed. That can really screw up the works.
