AHHHH Darn Mice

Well it has begun. A brand new sugarhouse, evaporator soaking and I found one. A lone dean mouse in a bucket of vinegar water. Pickled mouse really.
Other than the obvious, anyone have any time tested products or techniques to keeping the vermin out of the sugarhouse?
I am going to put everything possible into plastic totes but would like to find something that my kids cant get into and the dog wont get his tongue stuck / snapped in.

do a google search for adirondack mousetrap thats what i use except i use a soda bottle instead of a can. Just make sure the bottle spins free on the wire and there is enough water in the bucket the mice cant touch bottom.
