my question is how long of wood does everyone use and how does the pre heater let raw sap into the pan

I use 2 foot wood in my 2 by 6 But it depends on how long your grates are and the pre heater usally has a valve that you open to let the sap come in the pan you try to match your sap coming in to the steam that coming off to keep a constant level in your pan.

All preheaters are basically the same the length of the grates differ though
