How much will your boiling increase? I can boil 75 gal/hr consistently boiling 2% sap, once the pans are sweetened. I draw about a gallon and a half off in about an hour and then a half gallon every half hour. I assume I will increase my boiling rate boiling concentrate because I will be drawing off more, is a correct assumption ? Thanks for your input.

So if you had a 300 gal ro making that sap to 8% you would match your evap so you would process 300gph I think if my math is right.

Jim, With my evaporator I did not notice much of a change in the boiling rate going from 2% to 8%. I was making 2 gph syrup and now make 8 gph so that in theory would be 6 gph more thru the evaporator if the firing was exactly the same. On the other end I think you lose just a little as it takes more energy to bring 8% sap up to a boil than 2%, maybe not much but some.

Sudzy==you will not see an increase in your boiling rate. You will see an increase in yoiur output though. You and I have similar rigs--I concentrate to 18% or so and can make 15-18 gallons per hour.

Your actual evap rate won't increase but the amount of syrup that you draw off will. I believe that if you add that to your evap rate that is considered the increase. You get additional gains in syrup production by making your concentrate sweeter. I recirculate mine until I get to 16% or a little higher and draw off 6 or 7 gallons of syrup an hour with my 2x6. It's a lot of fun compared to the draw offs that I got with raw sap.

If I concentrate to 18% like Mike at Maplwrks I should boil 90-93 gal./hr,correct? First I'll need to buy or build an ro on the cheap. I will try for 8% first, will need to find more taps also. Mike that's a nice looking rig you have, what is the boiling rate using oil? Thanks for the input.

I assume you guys have refractometers to check that high of a sugar content? Or are there hydrometers that go that high? I usually figure I'm going to around 13-14%, but it's a guess since I only use a hydro.

Tim--I use a hydrometer that is used for beer and wine making. It will go to 35%. Quite a lot cheaper than a refractometer.I think that they are around $14 at a home brew store.
Jim--I think you misunderstanding us....Your evaporator will still only evaporate 60-70gph, So as you concentrate higher, you need less sap to make a gallon of syrup. If you run 18% sap, it takes approx 3.7 gallons to make a gallon of syrup. So, if you divide 3.7 into 70, you will get around17 gallons per hour out of your rig.(figuring off the top of my head)

1%=86 gallons.
2%=43
18%=4.77
