I sold firewood to a guy on the top of that road. He lived on the left in a yellow house, I think. Can't remember his name I think he worked for a stone company. He wanted me to do a small clearing job across from his house.

We use 15# felt most of the time and occasionaly 30# if we need extra protection under shingles. There are also a number of similar type products on the market that are a bit tougher and also cost more.

haha, well its pretty much finished up today we just have to build a ramp and Finnish the top of the smoke stack then put some shelves inside but im having a pretty ard time finding the right evaporator :-|

ClarkFarmMapleSyrup

If there are maples in a good number to start off like 50 or so, or more, dont buy a half pint. I am selling ours soon, because we bought a 2x6 and we did 101 on the halfpint and it was horrible! be ready for all day boils, because with only 4-5gph it is slow. Once you say you have a set # of taps, like 50, still look for more around, and soon youll be moving that number up, alot. I did. I said I wouldn'd do more than 30-40 taps like ever. then last year over a hundred, so Plan Big. Here is a evaporator that I would think is pretty cool http://www.mapleguys.com/index.php?item=395&ret=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mapleguys.com%2Findex.php%3Fp age%3D1%26category%3D27
also, they have 18"x5' evaps, and 2x5's good for a minimum of 50 taps.
Have fun, and nice sugar house. If I were you and starting out and buying an evap, dont make it so you have to buy a bigger one in a year like I did.

awesome, there are evaps out there to be had, just think about what you plan on doing in the future.

think manufac. advertise like 200 taps or so for a 2x6. How many taps do you plan on going with?

Going to A&W this coming Sunday, if I can will stop by

whitetail farms
06-01-2012, 08:41 PM
okay ill be more than happy to have you,the address is 603 TruesDale hill RD,its right at the top....i plan to tap 150 at the most probably

Revi

We have around 300 on a 2x6 and it is fine for years like the one we just had, but maybe a little small for a year like 2011. I don't think we'll get a bigger one because it's not that safe an area where we have our sugarhouse.

It seems to work well. I think if we had 400 or more taps we would need something bigger, or an RO. (or more time to boil)

whitetail farms
06-04-2012, 06:27 PM
yeah a 2X6 should be plenty for me for a many more years i think

When I first built my sugarhouse I planned a max of 200 taps, I'm now at 1100 growing to 1600-1700 this year and another 500-600 more the next year.. Caution, plan big, this is addictive to say the least.

i am going with that same size and am not using plans, just making it suit me. just make sure the walls are high enough and there is enough pitch to the roof, and then build it how you want it. thats what im doing, and wood or gravel or concrete floor?

Read North American Maple Producer's Manual, there is a chapter on sugarhouse design. I designed my own just from pictures of sugarhouses, before I even knew such a resource existed.
Whitetail farms, niether do I have enough land. Don't let that slow your dream. I only have enough for 130 sugar maple taps and another maybe 100 reds, of which I only tap 30 so far. The rest of my taps are all rented. On one lease I had 550 taps but dropped to 525 and eliminated the laterals with the most extreme climbs, my other lease had only a small portion of it's potential tapped. That lease will get another 400-600 taps this summer/fall and about the same each year until it maxes out at somewhere around 2000-2500 if my current guesstimate is close. It is a perfectly sloped bush, facing southwest, with predominately sugar maple (no soft maples at all). The landowner of that lease stopped to talk with me as I was collecting sap from my other lease and told me about his woods. It was just meant to be.
I got that landowner into an Ag Exemption based on my production and he is seeing taxes at about 1/3 of what it was, plus I pay him for the right to tap his trees (I'm on a 5 yr lease with automatic renewal for 5 more as long as I have not broken any terms of the lease)

yeah,im gonna tap some trees on my 3 neighbors land so that would give me 10 acres to tap on but im not really sure how many maples there are but my neighbor also owns 20 acres where someone used to tap not to far from me so i might start tapping there and trucking sap,i just hope i can but tubing up so i dont have to spend so much time driving and collecting buckets
