I am so jelous of you people out east I see all sorts of used evaporators for sell Some good deals but the only thing I see in Michigan is some one trying to sell a Sunrise 2 by 4 for 6000 dollars. I had 150 taps this year on a 55 gallon barrel and a 2 by 2 flat pan. I need therapy to stop the addiction or a bigger evaporator.

If i was starting from scratch i would buy this http://www.sugarbush.info/forsale/showproduct.php?product=34&title=2-27x6-27-v-flue-pan-set&cat=9 and build a arch with washer, dryer and bed frame parts. You would have a hot rod set of pans and only time and a little welding rod into a arch.

Or just buy mine, I'm not that far away! Would be perfect for your set up.

been looking at jmayerl Sounds OK It would be perfect if the rear pan was a raised flue and not flat. May is a busy month if it's still around in June may have to take a road trip to take a look. Looked atr the other site about the pans yes and wow I'd have planes crashing in mid air from the steam

Buy the pans and build the arch.... I have a dryer / bed frame setup and it is all you really need. Pans are the important part. If you are REALLY cheap you could build a set of plain steel pans for the cost of sheetmetal and a 11o mig welder. Not shiny and pretty, but it boils water just fine !! ;)

What is wrong with making a road trip? I drove from Pittsburgh to Manitowok WI to get my evaporator. A day up, night in a motel, a day back. I think I got a great price and the worst part of the whole trip was going through Chicago (lots of construction 3 years ago). Don't rule out a trip to New England. You can see a part of the country that you may never get the opportunity to see if it weren't for syrup. Plus make a few side trips to a few sugar houses.

I would love to make a side trip. I hear New England is beautiful but work and planting season says no. My wife can't travel any more active and I can't leave her alone very long with outhiring an aid.

If I put it on a 250 gallon take (that I aleady have and can cut) what kind of evaporation rate might I get

I would agree. Jim's v-flue pans would make a great starter rig. I bought some of the professional grade pans from him last summer and couldn't be happier. He is a great man to deal with. At least email him for some quotes.

+1 on this. I emailed Jim to get a quote on his hobby 2x3 pan. A bit pricy for me right now, but I'd definitely consider it when I get above 50 taps or so.

I sent an email through his website form, and he got back to me within a few hours. I mentioned that I'd probably drive up if I were to purchase it, and he offered to take me to some local sugar houses. How sweet is that?

Can't say if I'll ever be able to convince she-who-must-not-be-named that I need to spend over $1k on an evaporator pan, but I wouldn't hesitate going with Jim.

The evaporation rate can really depend on how much insulation you put in the arch and if you add a blower to your arch it will increase the rate and I think you will be really pleased.

I cant remember what he wanted for the v flue caus I was stupid and hit the wrong button Did really like the flue pans 2700 for the whole thing in drop flue for a 2 by 6 You need to 500 for a raised flue. He does make arches for this at 900. Just e-mailed him to see if there is a blower option and what shipping might be. Most likely I get the 2 by 6 pan set in drop flue due to the cost I really dont have the 900 bucks but in reality I know nothing about making an arch. To tell the truth I've never seen a real evaporator in action.
