I just bought a used Dom And Grimm 2x6 oil fired evaporator. The guy said when he bought his camp the evap came with it but never used it.The tag on the side says made in 1989..Looks in pretty good shape. It came with an arch ,smoke stack, oil fired burner, floats on the pans, two flat 2x6 pans. pans are divided sideways rather then up and down.He told me it was a serpintine method.I don't know why two pans?only room for one unless i have to stack them on top of the other but i don't think so.Can any body tell me roughly how many gallons an hour of sap i can boil with this unit

12-15 gph, thats what i would say. the pans may be lead soldeder if they ae from 1989, so you might want to check that out.

It sounds like it's probably a finisher?

It must be a finisher there would have been an evap before it possibly only a drop or raised flue pan then the sap would go into the 2x6 and and you would draw off syrup from that resin for the second pan is so you can swap them out and clean them it will probably around 15 maybe more

they would use the whole setup as a finisher??..Are you saying there would be two complete setups in the room??? one fired up for boiling say with drop flues and one fired up for finishing

Yup it would have been something like that the first rig may not have been all drop or raised

ok guys the guy dropped off the unit last night..Looks in real good shape..I checked the pans for soldered joints...Yes they are soldered>>>>>F*******....can i use it the way it is or do i have to remove the solder and tig or silver solder all joints...whats the difference with soldered verses tig or silver.are they toxic??.They used it in the 1980's????there is only solder on the deviders...should I put drop flues for the back four compartments or would it make a difference..Dont forget my pans are divided sideways rather then length wise

Do search about soldered joints but if it was that long ago it is probably lead

For what it's worth just leave it not worth redoing it.

Oh that stinks I think that is gonna be a big pain in the but and the good solder is fifty bucks a pound and it is going to take a long time but I know they used to have something like cash for clunkers good luck though.
