Here's a couple of pictures of mine on our facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pleasant-Valley-View-Farm/109461782466784?sk=photos It's 12X16 and going to add the woodshed this year. Go as large as you can.

Spencer- you know where I live- your welcome to swing by anytime. we have a 6 pitch roof...wouldn't go any flatter around here with snow loads.

Spencer your first year you don't need a concrete floor. Put some 3/4 stone and it packs down nice. I poured a concrete floor under my evaporator and put stone in the rest of the shack. If I can give you any advice build what you can afford. Sometimes we wait to build the perfect building and never build it, you can always add on as funds come available. Keep your eyes open for culled lumber it is not perfect, but it made a nice sugar shack for me.(Lowes) Good luck.Lee

I think a 2X8 or 3X8 is the max for a 12X16 building. Once i get the woodshed built it will be alot better. When a few people and my dog is in the sugarhouse you're always manuevering around them. I didn't have conctrete the first year, just stone and it worked out fine. Do what you can, and make some provisions for later. My walls are 61/2 feet and the peek is around 14 feet.

Woodsman what do you have for a floor? It looks like laminate. Thanks Lee

2 x 8 joists covered with 1/2 inch 4 x8 sheets then covered with 3/4 in 4 x 8 tounge and groove flooring sheets. The floor is 1 1/4 inch thick. I placed cement board under the arch and under the fire box 3 layers of cement board with 1/4 inch spacing in between to prevent heat transfer to wood floor.

Then 5 coats of polyurathane makes a floor easy to clean and mop.

thanks for all the pics and info.

eric, i may be able to come take a closer look at your shack if i get some time. i defenaly want to.

lastwoodsman, i think im going to just build a 12x16 like yours, since i dont know what i will be able to afford. make it post and beam construction with a metal roof and crushed stone or graval floor and concrete block under the evaporator for next year and maybe have concrete floor the year after if i can do it.

I don't have any pics but ours is 15x20 with a porch and woodshed we built from salvaged materials (father builds an tears down houses) another thing is a post and beam building is gonna be expensive unless you can cut it out on your own also you need to look to see what you need for a foundation we had to pour a five foot wall fill it in left an 18in knee wall and gonna pour a slab in the next few weeks.

one of my friends, dads is a logger and has a mill where i can get boards cheap if i go that way. and i plan to pour sonna tubes and then put 6x6's on there for posts. and then a slab in the next couple years.

Ok one more thing is need to make sure you have a good base so the frost doesn't affect your slab.

i can probably put about 1-1.5 feet of gravel to make it level with my driveway.

You will probably have to strip back the loom but also might want to get some tip who does dirt work in your area.

my neghibor actuall does dirt work but i hardly see him, but i will be sure to ask. the fill is very soft(i dont sink into it unless its water logged like in the spring) but its easy to dig with a shovel, so taking like 2 feet of wouldnt be that hard.

I had a 15 yard load of class 5 brought in as a base for the sugar shack. Very glad I did as nothing as moved as of yet and it drains very well.
