my friend has around 20 trees he can put on tubing, could he use a shop vac as a vacuum "pump"? i have 30 trees i will have on gravity could i do the same? thanks

No they are not meant to run all the time.

A shop vac would burn out rather quickly without a lot of air moving over the motor.

This has been discussed before. I believe a shop vac will only pull around 5" Hg. and as said with resticted air flow it will over heat and burnm out

no havent tried it ...and dont really want to if its not gonna work at at all for very long.

Just for the sake of discussion, what if you also ran a small fan over the shop vac motor to keep it cool?

I have tried it, mine only pulled around 3-4" of vacuum, trees had vacuum to them but it wasnt enough to get the sap out. I ran it for a long time and it didnt burn up but wasnt worth the electricity!

There is a guy in Durham who uses a shop vac to empty out his lines at night. Swears he gets more sap in the mornings this way. His sugarhouse is in the middle of a very small but dense bush, so I don't think it would work for most setups.
