I would like to plant some maples along a road side. Does anyone know where/if I can purchase sugar maples with high sugar content? I know Cornell has worked on offering an improved maple but not sure if they can be purchased. Thanks for the help.

Once possible alternative would be to find an available stand on unthinned maple saplings and drill a tiny hole in them to get small amount of sap to test with the refractometer. Cut down all but the highest sugar content trees then transplant the rest. I've heard that the sugar content varies from run to run, but the sweet trees always are the sweetest regardless.

We bought some of the RPM trees that you are talking about, planted 25 last fall. I think there might be some available. You can contact Helen Thomas at nysmaple.com she might be able to lead you to some.

can't you scientists just splice a sugarcane gene into the Sugar Maple so the sap will come out of the tree at 67 BRIX?
