I was wondering what the "proper" way to prep a SS drum for filling is? Hot water? Steam? Also, after you drain a drum, do you clean it then, or cap it and clean it right before the next filling?

Shine a light in and if is clean --- fill it to the point that there is no air and then seal it. If you are selling bulk it should come back clean, if you use it yourself then clean it with hot water, drain well and leave the bung off to allow it to dry. We have a small 40 watt bulb on a extension cord that we drop in to help them dry faster.

I do not think I have had a drum come back "clean" from a packer.

I know every time i turned in syrup at bascoms my containers came back to me clean as could be. What i do when cleaning them myself is use the steam cleaner pressure washer at work and the drain the water out and put the plug in while its still hot, there is a little water usualy left but have never had any mold growth etc since i close them up hot, also i know by the air rushing in sound when i open them to fill that they seal properly
