I've been filtering with the standard bag with 3-4 pre-filters for a lot of years. This year I have the opposite problem that is usually discussed here. My syrup is running through very quickly and not stopping the niter.I have never had this problem before. What I'm wondering is, how much validity there is to not "ringing out the bags" when washing them out. I've always done this, never knew you weren't supposed to until I read it here. I have several bags both wool and orlon that have been treated the same way.Not sure if this is my problem or not, but thought I would throw it out here for discussion.

I use only one or two prefilters and they capture most of the niter. When the hot syrup stops filtering, I drain the pint or so remaining thick syrup into a glass half gallon mason jar and let the niter settle out. The syrup laden cone filter I use, with a prefilter, to filter the next batch of sap going into the evaporator. That way I don't waste the syrup that remains in the filter.

I've rinsed and reused both my synthetic cone filter and prefilters many times. I only wrung the cone filter once, then found that swinging it down with a snap of my arm outside does a much better job of getting the water out. Most of the time I let rinsed filters drain overnight and they are damp dry. Once or twice a season I wash both prefilter and filters in the washing machine at the lowest water level using just hot water, no soap. They come out of the spin cycle almost dry.

I have no niter in my syrup filtering this way, it's nice and clear. None settles out after a year in the freezer, where I keep all my syrup in glass mason half gallon jars. I bottle as I sell my syrup retail.

I would say your orlon filter is worn out or damaged..make sure your temp is below 190...never wring out syrup/water from a orlon filter...

with this being my first year doing sugaring i find that it takes a looooooong time to filter. I do a prefilter and cloth right off the pan then finish the syrup at home. Filter into the last pan before i bottle. this filtering takes for ever and i never get it all out. Any advice would help. Thanks....jim
