Well yesterday one of my syrup filters got mistakenly put in the laundry and ran through. Now it smells like detergent. Is there any way to get the smell out, and will it hurt anything to use like it is???

I wouldn't use it. There's probably still detergent left in it that will spoil any batch you filter with it. Sorry, but don't have any good suggestions for cleaning it other than trying some long soaks and swishes in soft water to help dissolve the detergent. You could try distilled or even rainwater.

I would put it back through the washing machine (without detergent (lol)), until the smell gone.
I am sure this should work fine for you.

I would use it to start the next fire in the evaporator!

Is the smell:
A: Detergent
or
B: Fabric Softener
The fabric softener is awful and i doubt you will ever get it out of your filter. I acquired a used washing machine that had a fabric softener "dispenser" built into the top of the agitator. Where that washing machine had not been used for several months it had grown a yucky black mold all through that fabric softener dispenser and all down the agitator. I thought (somewhat mistakenly) that since it is a washing machine that a few cycles with clothing would clean that right up, but no such luck. I actually had to scrub that fabric softener/mold residue off from every surface, and try not to worry about the small cracks and crevices that I couldn't reach.
You might be able to get the detergent smell out, but why not spend the $16.50 on a new filter and save yourself the worry.

some folks say soaking odorous cloth in milk, yes milk, will remove smell. I can't verify it, as I haven't done it, but if you are desperate might be worth trying before you toss it - if you don't want to buy another one.....
