I've just finished boiling down my second small batch of syrup. The first one cooked too long and This one is quite murky. After boiling, I used a coffee filter but still appears to contain lots of niter. Should I filter it again?

you can heat it up to around 190 and refilter or just let it sit undisturbed in the fridge and let the nitre settle out. Or don't worry too much about it. Nitre is not harmful.

It won't hurt you if you don't, but since you don't have the proper filters you can use a double layer of a white bed sheet. Be sure you rinse all the detergent residue out of it and wring it out good and filter the syrup threw it when it is still damp.
I think you will be impressed with the results!
Be sure to heat up the syrup before you filter!
