I wasn't sure where to post this as there isn't a section for talking about equipment. I just found a company L.S. Bilodeau who have used evaporators for seemingly quite low prices. Maybe I misunderstand the French, but I have never seen 5x14 Dominion and Grimm wood fired evaporator for $2750 or a 4x12 wood fired Waterloo rig for $3495, although it is welded/soldered with tin. Does anyone else find these prices surprisingly low? The company is located in the Beauce region of Quebec. Here is the link to the page that lists those evaporators: http://translate.google.ca/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.lsbilodeau.com/&ei=aq9bT77TO4aziQLW18GTCw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCcQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dlsbilodeau.com%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff %26sa%3DX%26biw%3D702%26bih%3D611%26prmd%3Dimvns

I don't know anything about that company, but generally those huge rigs are not as desireable as the smaller rigs, so they are cheaper in an effort to get rid of them. They consume a lot of fuel, and most folks these days can get more out of a small evaporator with an R.O. in front of it, saving large amounts of both fuel and boiling time.

If it's tin or lead soldered, that's why it's cheap. There are lead tolerances now. Ontario is .5 PPM, not sure about Quebec.

Lead tolerances are Canadian, federal, not provincial laws.
LS bilodeau is well known in Québec, they are cheap only because they are wood fired. Huge rigs are common in Qc, but most of them are multi oil fired.

If you want some cheap lead soldered pans (around $500) for bigger evaporators, www.atkinsonmaple.com has a couple listed and they may have a few leaks. They have a 5x14 arch for $300, but no grates or stack.

Makes sense now, I had a feeling that they may be lead pans, as I often see a large prices difference from other manufacturers used equipment when comparing lead soldered pans vs. non lead soldered pans.
