Looking for thoughts on smoke stack damper

As I'm just getting ready for my second season of boiling my head is filled with all sorts of ideas to quicken the process from sap to syrup (without a steam away and RO, can't afford those toys yet). I have a WF Mason 2x6 drop tube, with 12' of 10" stack. It boils well, I have air under fire blower. I noticed that when I run the blower more than just barely it eats wood like crazy and takes a bit of the boil away from the syrup pan. I don't know what the stack temp. is running, just got a stack probe to help figure that out. I was wondering if a stack damper would help me retain some of the heat by cutting down the draft at the end. Just looking for some thoughts and insight.
