My homemade evaporator

After batch boiling on the stove, in the house for two years, I decided I needed a change. I wasn't even planning on making syrup this year but my 7yo daughter had different plans. So, I decided I would make a fast arch and evaporator so I could heat with wood outside. After doing some reading on this site about using aluminum, I decided to give it a try anyhow since it's what I had on hand, although others seem to advise to stay away from it. Anyhow, I have $24 in this thing and that was just to buy the stovepipe. The tin came off the shed that was replaced with new, the stand is an old catwalk from a set of oil tanks (the big ones), and the "evaporator" is yep, you guessed it, an aluminum tool box for a truck. It was given to me by a co-worker because the lid hinges had broken off of it and he was going to scrap it. It was pretty clean inside, no oil or grease, so I went over it good with a scouring pad and boiled several batches of water and dawn dish soap, then boiled twice with clean water. It seems to get around 6.5 to 7 gph and I love it. Anyhow, here is a pic. Please don't be too hard on me.

I'm not gonna be hard on ya. You have a better setup than I do. I'm just doing it over blocks without a stovepipe. The great thing is that you can have many different setups and get about the same yummy product as everyone else. Go get 'em!

I think I saw that on an episode of "you might be a redneck if..." LOL... in all seriousness, I give you a friggin A++ for creativity man! Awesome! And like Trout said, best thing is at the end of the day, you have syrup just like the rest of us!

Thanks guys. I managed to boil down 13 gal. yesterday evening after work and got about 1 1/2 quarts. I could drink the stuff strait from the jar.:D
