A buddy brought me over 15 5 gallon pails last night
they are nice & clean, washed etc
but they had garlic pickles in them, the smell is not strong but it is there
is there anything I could used to get rid of it?
will it transfer to the sap?

I eat alot of things but garlic flavoured Maple syrup is not one I want to try

I had some 5 gallon jugs that had olives in them. I tried everything, but nothing even came close, so I just put the jugs away in my shed with the lids off all summer and now they are perfect!.

We use a commercial Dishwasher at 165* wash temp and at least a 180* rinse temp, that is for over 25 times and the garlic smell is still there, just sayin'. Bleach may do it, not sure…give it a try

You could try smearing a paste of baking soda in them, closing them, and leaving a day or two. Wash them good with a little bleach and put them outside in the sun to air out. But I have a feeling it's going to take more than a few days to get the smell out. You may be able to use them next year. I have a big 55 G storage container that held olives that we use to catch rain. Still smells like olives after more than a few years.

I had 35 old oil pails that I picked up at a chip truck. They Stunk like old fries lol. I put straight bleech in the pails, poured it out stacked them for a day then rinsed them. Clean and fresh.

Yes, in years past I raided the bakeries too. Lots of free or really cheap, odor free pails with lids. I would'nt chance the garlic laced pails.

We expanded this year and had to get a couple of storage barrels. I found 60 gallons drums that held pickeled cherry peppers. I washed them with bleach, baking soda paste, etc. Nothing worked. We got a couple of huge runs and I had no choice but to use them. The syrup turned out fine. Our season ended and they still smell. I plan on leaving them out uncovered and see if that will work. All of our buckets came from a local bakery and had butter cream frosting in them. We figured it could only help with the taste.
