Hey Guys-
Anyone ever make maple taffy?
Pour it on the snow and roll it up on popsicle sticks?
How do we do this?
Really appreciate some simple instructions or directions.

Thanks

Have you checked the forum maple candy section? Never made it but someone posted a link to an article about Native American sugaring history a few days ago. You might be interested in reading about how they did it. it was often the only candy the kids got and they always looked forward to it.

The short taffy section is here near the top of the page:

Made some this weekend for my grandchildren. Bring the syrup to 240 degrees and pour it in a line (or happy face) in the snow. Tell 'em to let it melt in their mouths. Gets pretty sticky if you chew it. HAVE FUN!

I know what doesnt work. It doesnt work when its only 3-4 lines above sap on the hydrometer.

Also know that when its hot, it just melts into the snow, we got a bit luckier when the pot really cooled down and it was quite thick.

However none of the above was like I remembered it being as a child.

We did this recently for the kids. I added like 2 T of butter to maybe a cup of syrup. Then heated it until it thickened. I dont have a candy thermometer, but I knew it was ready when it gets thicker and coats a spoon. If it just melts the snow it needs to cook longer, just put it back on the stove :) sooo yummy.

Hey, probably a bit late on this post, but we make a ton of taffy.
We heat it to 234 (same as cream), then use a table spoon to lay the taffy in lines on the snow. We actually make and sell probably 5 gallons of syrup into taffy every spring. We just pour it into a jar as soon as its 234 and immediately put it in the freezer. If you leave it out it will turn to sugar. Then when we want to pour some on snow we just take a jar, microwave it for a few 30 second intervals and pour it on the snow. Easy as pie! Enjoy!
