I was reading on a wood heating forum about putting a cup of amonia in the fire box of a wood stove loosens creosote. Would this work on english tin pans or would the amonia attack the tinning?

Ammonia is a strong base. It will attack the tinning. So will acids. Per a recent thread re a metallic taste to syrup made in tin after pan cleaning, be careful what you expose your tin to and be very gentle in their care. The advice by Dr Tim in that thread was to discard all the syrup from that batch.

Thanks for the reply. The other thread was what got me thinking about this, but didn't want to hijack thread. I didn't know if amonia being basic would react differently than the acid.
