I know im supose to add sap to the preheater as sap boils off. My preheater part of the pan was boiling alot at times. does this mean i was not adding fresh sap fast enough. My pan is 18X48. the back part is 18 X24 and the front 18 X 24 with 2 dividers and the drain off. Any help will be sweet. Thanks all.....jim

With those pan type preheaters, it is really just a second pan, maybe not in a very good spot the really heat up.

It you have it boiling, thats great. The more boiling going on the faster you make syrup. You should have the preheater dribbling into your main pan to maintain level. And make sure any condensate on the bottom of it doesn't drip back into your pan.
