View Full Version : Ceramic Tile to Line Arch?

Fire bricks around here are around 4 to 5 bucks each. Ceramic tile is much cheaper. Is it possible to use this as a liner for an arch? It would still be cheaper if I needed to double up the thickness.

Thanks,
Harold

I just read an article on DIY bake ovens and the use of glazed tile was not advised as a liner because it will crack. Maybe a fired unglazed terra cotta would work, as long as you know it was fired and not air dried. But that said, how expensive was your arch and is it worth pinching pennies to protect that investment? Maybe you can find some used fire brick.

I am looking. I will keep on looking for used brick as well.

Hi, Papa- I can't decide which I love better, maple syrup or a good crusty loaf of fresh baked bread.

The following is where I read about ceramic tiles. This is a very complete illustrated guide for building a pretty efficient indoor masonry fireplace with bake oven. It's a download so you'll need adobe reader.

But you'd probably be more interested in outdoor cob ovens which can be built fairly inexpensively. Here's one I saw yesterday they say can be made for $20

Some other sites I had bookmarked a while ago.......

Good detailed pics and info on construction @ http://woodfiredpizza.org/index.html

some nice pics and more info @ http://ovencrafters.net/

I got interested in bake ovens after a visit to Quebec City many years ago where bread sold from outdoor bake ovens seemed to be everywhere. Maybe some our Canadian friends will have some other links or tips. We have a small concrete pad laying out in a pasture. I'm waiting for the timing to be right to sneak one of these onto the honeydo list.:lol:

I can tell you this if you look for propane swimming pool heaters that have been discarded remove the fire stop panels for your arch. I built a homemade rig in 1 day from a pool heater and an oil burner. Its not pretty but it works good and was so so cheap. The heaters are ussualy free if they dont work.
