The sap yield from 5/16" taps will be a little less than the 7/16" taps but the trees will heal much faster with the 5/16" taps. I use the 5/16" taps with buckets and recommend using them.

I use the 5/16" taps on my sap sacks.

Another vote for 5/16. The decrease in sap is small and the holes heal much faster.

Check this out from the University of Vermont...

Essentially.
1. 5-16 leaves a smaller cross section that heals faster
2. 5/16 vs 7/16 avg was 94% in yield
3. Smaller diameter holes, means more taping on a single charge of battery
